Spartan Women Compete at Salisbury Invitational
SALISBURY, MD-The York College women’s track and field squad opened their 2008 season at the Salisbury University Invitational in Salisbury, MD on Saturday. The meet was a non-scoring team meet and featured nine schools.
The Spartans netted two first place finishes and two second place finishes to highlight the day. The green and white also had one relay win and second place relay finish.
Freshman Caitlin Rizzardo (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown) picked up York’s initial first place finish as she won the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.75 meters. York’s other win came from sophomore Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) as she was first in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:15.0. Parshall also picked up a second place finish for York as she was the runner-up in the 800 meters with a time of 2:42.3
York’s 4x100 relay won their race with a time of 56.6 while the 4x400 squad placed second with a time of 4:55.7
Freshman Caitlin Mahan (Delran, N.J./Delran) placed second in the discus with a throw of 30.56 meters. Mahan also recorded a third place finish in the javelin (24.25 meters), fifth in the hammer (19.86 meters), and fifth in the shot put (8.97 meters) as her Spartan debut was very successful.
Also collecting third place finishes for York were Terah Bloemer (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) in the 400 meters, Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) in the triple jump, Jess Berry (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Pine Grove Area) in the discus, Mackenzie Dolan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) in the hammer, Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) in the high jump, and Kristen Cronise (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) in the pole vault.
Montello recorded a pair of fourth place finishes for York. She was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 4.53 meters and fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.49 meters. Anna Hershner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) recorded another fourth for York in the pole vault.
Smelko and Montello each added a fifth place finish to the Spartan effort. Smelko was fifth in the long jump while Montello was fifth in the 200 meters. Lauren DeSimone (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) was fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 14.7.
The Spartans return to action on March 19 as they host Goucher, Hood, and Columbia Union in a home quad meet. The meet is scheduled to start at 3:30 pm.
