TOWSON, MD - The York College women’s track and field
squad earned a second place finish in the seven-team Goucher
Classic Saturday in Towson, MD. The Spartans accumulated 130 team
points while first place Ursinus collected 185.
The green and white registered a total of 20 top-five finishes
including three first place spots. The Spartans were especially
strong in the throwing events earning eleven of their top five
finishes. Senior thrower Sarah Becker (Red Lion, Pa./Red
Lion) captured two first place finishes on the day. In the
discus, Becker launched a toss of 103 feet, three inches to garner
the top spot. She also threw the hammer 119 feet, six inches, tops
for the meet. Becker also finished second in the shot put and ninth
in the javelin.
Following Becker in the discus were Jessie Berry
(Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Pine Grove Area) with a 95 foot,
four inch throw that landed her in the second spot, Caitlin
Mahan (Delran, N.J./Delran) with a 92 foot, eight inch
toss for third place, and Mackenzie Dolan (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River East) whose 79 foot distance earned her
the fifth spot.
The hammer throw saw Mahan place third with a throw of 91 feet,
eight inches and Dolan capture fourth with a 90 foot toss. Dolan
also took third in the shot put, while Mahan and Berry took fifth
and tenth respectively. Mahan’s best finish came in the
javelin when she finished second with a throw of 89 feet, nine
inches.
In the pole vault, the Spartans took the top three spots with
Kristen Cronise (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock)
taking first with a height of nine feet, 0.25 inches.
Caitlin Rizzardo (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown) and
Anna Hershner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) tied
for second place vaulting eight feet, 0.5 inches.
Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) and
Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney)
combined for a strong showing in the jumps for the Spartan side.
Smelko grabbed second in the triple jump with a bound of 32 feet,
nine inches while Montello took third in the event with a distance
of 31 feet, 11.25 inches. Montello also came in fourth in the high
jump and Smelko earned sixth in the long jump.
On the track, the Spartans earned nine top-ten finishes.
Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) garnered
two of those top-tens coming in third in the 5,000 meters with a
time of 21:00 while she finished seventh in the 1,500 meters.
Mackenzie Kauffman (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley)
took the tenth spot in the 1,500 meters at 5:37 in addition to her
ninth place finish in the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:42.
Terah Bloemer’s (Stewartstown,
Pa./Kennard-Dale) 1:13 time in the 400 meters earned the
sophomore third place in the event. Bloemer also turned in a time
of 31.20 in the 200 meters, good for eighth. In the 100 meters,
Smelko earned a tenth place finish with a time of 14.12.
The Spartan relay teams both earned third place finishes. The
4x100 relay team posted a time of 55.62 while the 4x400 squad
crossed the line at 4:36.58.
York returns to action on Saturday, April 12, traveling to
Grantham, PA for the Messiah Invitational.
