YORK, PA-The York College women’s track and field squad finished third of six teams at the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference championships at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center in York, PA. The Spartans finished with 97 points to finish ahead of Hood (49 points), Wesley (13 points), and Gallaudet (6 points). Mary Washington won the team championship with 251 points while Salisbury placed second with 198 points.
The Spartans received a very strong showing from their throwers as they were outstanding all day long.
Two of York’s three first place finishes came from the throws as senior Sarah Becker (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and freshman Caitlin Mahan (Delran, N.J./Delran) won the hammer throw and the javelin respectively. Becker defended her hammer throw title from last year, as she notched a best-throw of 40.71 meters. Mahan won the javelin with a toss of 29.34 meters. The duo also had strong showings in other events. Becker finished fourth in the shot (10.12 meters) and fourth in the discus (31.98 meters) while Mahan was third in the shot (10.7 meters), fourth in the hammer (30.19 meters), and sixth in the discus 29.10 meters). Freshman Mackenzie Dolan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) also had a strong meet as she finished third in the hammer and fifth in the shot.
Freshman Caitlin Rizzardo (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown) picked up York’s other victory as she won the pole vault as she cleared a height of 3.03 meters. She was joined by Anna Hershner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) and Kristen Cronise (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) in the top four in the event. Hershner finished third in the event with a height of 2.73 meters while Cronise cleared a height of 2.58 meters to finish fourth.
Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) recorded York’s lone second place finish as she was the runner up in triple jump with a distance of 10.28 meters.
Both Spartan relay teams finished third as the 4x100 team notched a team of 53.83 while the 4x400 team recorded a time of 4:29.59.
Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) recorded a fourth place finish for York in the triple jump, clearing a distance of 9.83 meters.
Jessie Berry (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Pine Grove Area) and Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) notched two of York’s fifth place finishes. Berry recorded a toss of 29.22 meters in the discus while Parshall had a time of 5:22.37 in the 1,500 meters.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday when they travel to Shippensburg for the Shippensburg Invitational. The action kicks off at 10:00 am in Shippensburg, PA.
