Ursinus Downs Spartans in Spring Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The York College women's tennis team opened the spring portion of their 2016-17 season with an 8-1 setback against Ursinus College on Saturday in Collegeville, PA.

The loss is the first of the season for the Spartans as they fall to 3-1 overall. The Bears improve to 6-1.

The match was played in Ursinus' FLB Field House because the outside courts were still covered by snow.

The Spartans fell behind early as the Bears swept the three doubles matches. The Spartan duo of Rachel Wagner and Mckenzie Krout kept their second doubles match close as they fell 9-7.

The Bears sewed up the match by earning wins at third and second singles play. Junior Katie Wagner played a three set thriller before falling to Aileen Bevard in the first singles match. Maisie Supp earned York's lone with an 8-6 victory at fifth singles.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they head to Albright to face the Lions in a non-conference match. Start time is set for 3:00 pm in Reading.
