HARRISBURG, Pa. – The York College women's tennis team picked up their first victory of the 2012 spring campaign as they bested host Penn St.-Harrisburg 5-0 in a shortened match Tuesday. With the victory, the Spartans move to 2-4 overall on the season while the Lions drop to 5-5.
The Spartans picked up three of their five points during double play. In the top doubles slot, Samantha Brenner teamed with Emily Skutnik for the first time this season as the pair posted a tight 9-7 triumph. The second tandem of Kacie Weatherhead and Emily Price secured an 8-0 victory while Arcondia Vlahos and Nicole Olson's 8-1 third doubles triumph added a point to the Green and White ledger.
In singles play, Vlahos tallied her fourth triumph of the 2011-2012 season as she won her third singles flight 6-1, 6-0. Price nabbed her first collegiate singles win as she put together a straight-set result, winning fifth singles 6-2, 6-1.
Despite the other three singles matches going unfinished, the Spartans were leading each match. Weatherhead held a 4-2 first-set advantage in first singles while Brenner was up 2-1 in the second spot. At fourth singles, Olson won the first set 6-4 and was tied at 2-2 with Jordan Simpkins in the second. Skutnik, York's choice at sixth singles on Tuesday, was leading 2-0 at the close of her match.
Back in the win column, the Spartans return to action on Thursday, March 22, when they travel to Lebanon Valley for a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt against the Flying Dutchmen.
