YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer team posted a 7-2 non-conference win over Messiah College on Wednesday afternoon in York. The Spartans are now 1-1 for the fall campaign while the Falcons are now 0-1.
The Spartans took an early lead as York won two of the three doubles matches. York dropped the first doubles match but rebounded to win the second and third doubles matches. Kacie Weatherhead and Megan McCullin notched an 8-2 win in the second doubles contest. In a close and tightly contested third doubles match, York's Sarah Wargo and Arcondia Vlahos outlasted Messiah's Michelle Curtis and Jennifer Kitian 9-8 and 8-6 in the tiebreaker.
In singles play, Wargo recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win at first singles. Weatherhead followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in her second singles match up with Sarah Brookart. McCullin and Samantha Brenner each notched straight set wins for York in the third and fourth singles flights.
The Falcons notched a win in the fifth singles while Nicole Olsen closed out the match with an 8-4 win in the sixth singles match.
The Spartans return to action on Friday afternoon when they host Clarion University in a non-conference match at noon.
