SALISBURY, Md. – The York College women's tennis team saw their 2010-2011 campaign come to a close on Tuesday afternoon, falling 9-0 at Salisbury in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Spartans conclude their season with an 11-7 mark while the Sea Gulls move on to the CAC Championship with a record of 14-2.
Junior Katelyn Acker and freshman Nicole Olson put up solid efforts in the second and fifth slots, respectively. However, both fell to their Salisbury counterparts, 6-4, 6-1.
Despite the loss, the Green and White put together a quality season. Finishing with their 11-7 mark, York establishing a new program record for wins in a single season, eclipsing the ten-win mark for the first time in their history, while they posted an above .500 record for the first time since 2005.
Acker completes her third year with the Spartans as she had a strong campaign. The junior posted a career-best 12 singles victories (finishing the year with a 12-7 record) while she teamed with rookie Sarah Wargo to tally eight doubles victories. Acker's 12 singles victories establishes a new program-best, passing her own previous high of 11 set last season.
Megan McCullin also registered a solid year for the Green and White with an 8-7 singles mark.
Stephanie Nelson, York's lone senior on this year's squad, finishes her career after posting a 5-2 record in singles and a 6-1 mark in doubles play.
Over the previous four seasons, the Spartans have totaled 28 team wins including 15 in CAC play.
The future looks bright for the York squad as seven of their eight players are slated to return next season including Wargo and Acker – the Spartans' #1 and #2 singles players this season.
