Spartans Post Spring-Opening Win at Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The York College women's tennis squad kicked-off their 2011 spring campaign on Wednesday with a 6-3 triumph over St. John Fisher in Hilton Head, S.C. The Spartans open the spring at 1-0 while the Cardinals move to 1-2 during their trip to Hilton Head.

The Green and White opened the match by snagging two of the three doubles points, taking first and third doubles. Junior Katelyn Acker joined with rookie Sarah Wargo to post a tight 9-8 (7-5) triumph in the first slot.

At third doubles, a pair of Spartan newcomers, Arcondia Vlahos and Joelle Stasak, combined to record an 8-5 victory over Sarah Zarzeczny and Katie Catalano.

In singles action, the Green and White stretched their 2-1 lead to a result of 6-3 with four victories.

Acker registered a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at second singles while Samantha Brenner recorded her first win of 2011 with a 7-6 (4-0), 6-4 victory at number three.

Megan McCullin notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at fourth singles while Vlahos won 6-0, 6-1 at number five.

The Spartans return to action on Friday, March 4, when they take on St. Vincent at 11:30 am from Hilton Head.
