HILTON HEAD, SC – The York College women’s tennis
team posted a 1-1 record on Wednesday as the Spartans topped St.
John Fisher 5-4 before falling to Augustana 8-1 in Hilton Head,
S.C. With the split, the Green and White move to 1-2 on the young
campaign.
Against St. John Fisher the Spartans nabbed four of the six
singles matches, highlighted by sophomore Katelyn
Acker’s (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) victory in the
#1 slot. Acker registered a 1-6, 6-4, 10-3 comeback triumph over
Elena Vahl.
York then snagged the three through five spots. Samantha
Brenner (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll), another talented
young Spartan, notched a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 victory over Katelyn
Smith while rookie Megan McMullin (New Windsor,
Md./Westminster Senior) collected her first collegiate
triumph with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 decision. Stephanie Nelson
(Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) closed the Spartan run with
a 6-3, 6-2 win at fifth singles.
In doubles play, the Green and White captured the #2 slot to
secure the team victory. Brenner and McCullin teamed up for the 8-3
triumph.
The Spartans did not fare so well against Augustana. York’s
lone win in the match came from Acker in first singles as she
bested Jenna Richardson 6-4, 6-4. The win pushes the
sophomore’s individual mark to 2-1 for the 2010 campaign.
Brenner pushed Tricia Crawford to the limit in each of the two
sets at #3 singles, but fell just short 7-6 (4), 7-5.
York continues their Hilton Head spring break trip on Friday,
March 5. The Green and White are set to face St. Vincent at 11:30
a.m.
