YORK, PA – The York College women’s tennis squad recorded a 6-3 win over Stevenson University in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Sunday in York. The Spartans improve to 5-10 while the Mustangs fall to 4-10-1.
The Spartans recorded wins in two of three doubles matches to secure the early lead in the match. Katelyn Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Paige Doutrich (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) combined to post an 8-6 win in the first doubles tilt. The Mustangs won the second doubles match up but York’s Stephanie Nelson (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) and Caralyn Caruso (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County) gave the Spartans a 2-1 edge with an 8-2 win in the third doubles match.
Acker picked up her second win of the day as she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win in the first singles match. Stevenson earned a win in the second and fourth singles but York captured the second, fifth and sixth singles to secure the win. Heidi Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) earned a 6-2, 6-4 in the third singles while Nelson bageled Izzy Kaiser in the fifth singles match. Samantha Brenner (Mt. Air, Md./South Carroll) closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the sixth singles tilt.
The Spartans now travel to Salisbury University to face the second seeded Sea Gulls on Tuesday. The start time for the match will be announced shortly.
