Spartans Push Gophers Despite Loss
TOWSON, MD – The York College
women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision Thursday to
Goucher in Towson, Md. The loss pulls the Spartans’ 2009
record down to 1-8 while the Gophers up their season mark to
9-2.
The Spartan duo of Katelyn Acker
(Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Paige Doutrich
(Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) secured the #1 doubles slot for
the Green and White. Acker and Doutrich defeated Tanya Cooley and
Carly Heinz by an 8-6 score to capture the pair’s first
doubles victory of the year.
Despite the final score, the Spartans pushed
four of the six singles matches into the third set.
In first singles, Acker won the first set of her
match 6-4, before falling in the second 6-1. Acker battled in the
third but fell by a tight 7-5 result.
Elder sister Heidi Acker (Narvon,
Pa./Pequea Valley) also won her first set in third singles
7-5. However Goucher’s Mouna Attarha fought back to take the
next two sets 6-4, 6-3.
In fourth singles, senior Keturah
Buchanan (York, Pa./William Penn) followed nearly the same
model as both Ackers. Buchanan won her first set 6-4 over Joan
Pulupa. Pulupa then recorded the come back victory with two 6-1
triumphs over the final two sets.
Megan Logan (West Chester, Pa./West
Chester East) forced her fifth singles’ match into
the third set. After dropping the first set 6-1, Logan won the
second by a 6-4 count. However, Logan’s match would end in
favor of the Gophers as Coe Scott-Giry took the third set 6-1.
The Green and White now face a grueling four
matches in four days, each of which take place at home. The stretch
begins this Sunday, April 5, with a date with the Eagles of Mary
Washington. York takes on their CAC foe at 4:00 pm.
