YORK, PA - The York College women’s tennis team cruised to their first win of the season as they downed the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 1-3 with the win while UMES falls to 0-1.
The Spartans won two matches without dropping a game as Megan Logan (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) at third singles and Heidi Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) at fifth singles each rolled to 6-0, 6-0 wins in their respective matches.
Keturah Buchanan (York, Pa./William Penn) dropped just one game as she recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles. Paige Doutrich (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) also lost just one game in her fourth singles matches as she won 6-1, 6-0.
Amber Nelson (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) had the toughest match of the day at second singles as she outlasted Bolanle Abioye 6-4, 6-2.
The Spartan tandem of Nelson and Buchanan earned an 8-5 win in the first doubles match while Doutrich and Nelson teamed up to win the second doubles match 8-0.
Eastern Shore was unable to field a sixth singles player or a third doubles team so the Spartans earned forfeit points in both of those flights.
The Spartans return to action on March 14 when they host Salisbury in a CAC contest. Game time is set for 3:00 pm at the Spartan Tennis Center.
