York Drops Tough Opener

HILTON HEAD, SC - The York College women’s tennis team took a tough loss in their opening match of the season Tuesday morning falling 5-4 to Adrian College in Hilton Head, SC. The Spartans start 0-1 for the year while the Bulldogs improve to 1-4.

Adrian garnered their singles wins in the top three slots of the line-up. The green and white got on the board with a Paige Doutrich (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Leeann Brooks. Junior Heidi Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) and freshman Stephanie Nelson (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) evened the match score with a pair of wins from the fifth and sixth flights respectively. Acker took her match 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 while Nelson grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

In doubles play, Doutrich and Nelson won their match 8-4 but it simply was not enough to catapult the Spartans to the team win. Adrian won the first and second flight doubles 8-3 and 8-6 to secure the victory.

York returns to action on Wednesday, February 27, as they take on St. John Fisher at 12:00 pm in the final match of the winter break trip to Hilton Head, SC.
