ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College women's swim squad capped a fantastic three day stay at the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships in St. Mary's City, MD.
The Spartans finished third of six teams with a point total of 444. The third place finish is the highest in school history.
Spartan head coach Erin Kurtz was named as one of the CAC Coaches of the Year as announced at the conclusion of the meet.
The Spartans started the night with a strong showing in the 1650 free. Lindsey Buglino (Wharton, N.J./Jefferson) registered a fifth place finish in the race with a time of 18:01.95. Senior Jenny Hinkle (Olney, Md./Sherwood) posted a seventh place finish with a time of 18:45.81 while teammate Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) was right behind Hinkle in eight place. Tonkay finished with a time of 18:56.14.
A pair of Spartans performed well in the finals of the 100 free. Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa./Dover) notched a sixth place finish with a time of 54.91. Freshman Ashley McManus (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) touched the wall in eighth in the finals as she checked in with a time of 56.97.
Freshman Maria Allera (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) swam well in the 200 fly as she finished seventh with a time of 2:23.56.
The 400 medley relay time of Dacheux, Megan Shannon (Hanover, Pa./South Western), McManus, and Buglino finished third to close out the championships. The foursome recorded a time of 3:43.51 as they finished three seconds out of second place.
The Spartans must say goodbye to their seniors as Hinkle, Danielle Marino (Wind Gap, Pa./Nazareth), Megan Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck), and Kelsie Pike (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) have closed out their Spartan careers. The Green and White will return a number of their top performers next year, as the 2014-15 season will have great possibilities.
