Strong Performances Lead Spartans over Blue Jays
YORK, Pa. – The York College women's swim team dove into action Saturday afternoon as they defeated Elizabethtown College by a score of 112-93.
The Green and White started the day strong by taking first place points in the 200 yard medley relay. The quartet of senior Megan Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J. / Colts Neck), junior Lindsey Buglino (Wharton, N.J. / Jefferson), freshman Ashley McManus (Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley), and junior Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa. / Dover) combined for a time of 1:59.34. Murphy swam the backstroke portion of the event in 32.42. Buglino followed with a 33.17 in the breaststroke portion. McManus would add a split of 27.79 in the butterfly laps. Dacheux brought the win home with a 25.96 in the freestyle portion.
The first individual contest of the afternoon saw senior Jenny Hinkle (Olney, Md. / Sherwood) capture second place points in the 1,000 yard freestyle. She finished her 40 laps in 11:33.98.
The 200 yard freestyle event had two Spartans contribute with top three points. Megan Shannon (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) took second place as she touched the wall in 2:09.08. Murphy would support Shannon with a third place finish completing her eight laps in 2:10.31.
Junior Casenya Stone (Annandale, Va. / The New School of Virginia) earned the Green and White's first individual win. Her 50 yard freestyle sprint was over in just 25.75. Dacheux would compliment Stone finishing just 0.2 seconds later, touching the wall at 25.95.
Buglino would continue the winning ways as she took first place points in the 200 yard IM event. She completed the four-stroke event in 2:19.90. Sophomore Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa. / Hempfield) would finish second in the event finishing her four stroke in 2:33.24.
Senior Kelsie Pike (Newark, Del. / St. Mark's) recorded splits of 30.88 and 35.43 to best the field in the 100 yard butterfly. Her final time was 1:06.31.
Stone and McManus would finish a close 2-3 in the 100 yard freestyle. Stone's second place 57.58 was just 0.43 seconds short of first place. McManus would finish right behind Stone with a time of 57.63. Murphy's consistent splits of 34.01 and 34.54 would pace her to a first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a final time of 1:08.55. Freshman Samantha Wingate (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) got in on the action with a second place 1:10.25.
Hinkle would earn third place points in the 500 yard freestyle. She completed the 20 lap race in 5:47.03.
Buglino and Pike would finish off the individual portion of the meet by finishing second and third, respectively, in the 100 yard breaststroke. Buglino finished her four laps in 1:13.05, while pike touched the wall in 1:17.39.
The final event of the night saw McManus, Shannon, Dacheux, and Stone combine for a 1:45.40 finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The time was good for first place points.
The 2-0 Spartans look to continue their strong start as the take on conference foe Mary Washington on Friday November, 1 at 6:00 pm at the York College Natatorium.
