Spartans Dive Into Season With Win Over Frostburg

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's swim team kicked off the 2013-2014 season with a 138-112 victory of the Frostburg State University Bobcats Saturday afternoon in the York College Natatorium. The meet was part of York's Fall Fest and Alumni Weekend.

The Green and White opened the season strong as the 200 yard relay team of senior Megan Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J. / Colts Neck), junior Lindsey Buglino (Wharton, N.J. / Jefferson), freshman Maria Allera (Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake), and junior Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa. / Dover) captured a first place finish culminating for a time of 2:01.29.

The individual portion of the meet brought an abundance of success for the Spartans. Senior Jenny Hinkle (Olney, Md. / Sherwood) earned her first top finish of the season by completing the 40 lap, 1000 yard freestyle in 11:48.48. Finishing behind Hinkle was fellow Spartan Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa. / Hempfield), who posted a time of 12:12.09.

Junior Megan Shannon (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) returned to the water with a first place performance. Her 2:10.54 chalked nine points on the Green and White leger. Hinkle followed Shannon with a second place 2:13.03.

Murphy's first individual event of the new campaign matched her relay performance. She touched the in 31.89, capturing first place points in the 50 yard backstroke. Freshman Samantha Wingate (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) complimented Murphy's first place with a second place 33.90 in her first collegiate action. 

Dacheux got off to a strong start by recording a 34.45 in the 50 yard breaststroke. Following Dacheux's first place pace, senior Kelsie Pike (Newark, Del. / St. Mark's) finished second finishing her two laps in 35.00. 

Buglino picked up where she left off last season, putting forth another strong performance in the 100 yard butterfly event with a time of 1:03.31.

Murphy would pick up another first place finish in the 50 yard freestyle race sprinting to a 27.76 finish.

Buglino, Dacheux, and Shannon combined to nab the top three places in the 100 yard freestyle. Buglino's 57.93 set the pace. Dacheux followed with a 58.32 before Shannon touched in 29.33.

Junior Sammy Greenwald (Germantown, Md. / Northwest) took the water in the 100 yard backstroke. Her 1:09.37 would pace the field. Wingate would chalk up her second runner-up finish with a time of 1:13.65.

Pike would go on be the top Spartan in the 100 yard breaststroke as she posted a time of 1:19.38. Senior Danielle Marino (Wind Gap, Pa. / Nazareth) would finish close behind pike with her 1:19.60 performance.

The strong all-around start from the Spartans provided the opportunity to swim exhibition in the last four events of the day. Those events were highlighted by Buglino's posting a 5:32.34 and freshman Ashley McManus's (Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley) 5:45.96 in the 500 yard freestyle. Junior Meg Walker (New Castle, Del. / Pencader Charter) posted a 31.69 in the 50 yard butterfly race. Hinkle and Tonkay teamed up for another strong collective performance posting respective times of 2:30.79 and 2:31.66 in the 200 yard individual medley.

The win provides a 1-0 start for the Spartans, who will next be in action on Saturday October 26, when the Elizabethtown Blue Jays visit the York College Natatorium. Meet time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
