Records Fall During First Day of CAC Championships

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The York College women's swimming team kicked off the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships on Friday at St. Mary's College of Maryland. At the end of day one, the Spartans currently stand in fourth place with 115 points and finished with two new school records.

The Green and White started the first day of preliminaries with the 500 yard freestyle contest. The event saw three Spartans qualify for the night's finals. Leading the Green and White attack was junior Jenny Hinkle (Olney, Md./Sherwood), who posted a career best 5:19.70 to qualify in the seventh position. Teammates Megan Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck) and Maddie Tonkay (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) also qualified for evening competition.  

The weekend's first record was broken by sophomore Lindsey Buglino (Wharton, N.J./Jefferson), whose 2:16.07 broke the school record set in the 200 yard IM by teammate Anna Schuster (Reistertown, Md/Franklin) in 2011. Schuster would qualify for consolation competition in this year's meet with a time of 2:22.85.

In the final event of the morning, Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa./Dover), Casenya Stone (Annandale, Va./The New School Of Northern Virginia), and Katelyn Romm (Chester,Md/Kent Island) each posted qualifying times in the 50 yard freestyle. Dacheux's 25.21 was good for a seventh place finish and entry into the 'A' qualifing heat. Stone's pace of 25.46 was good for a qualification in the consolation heat in the nightcap, as Romm's 27.35 garnered a sixteenth place finish.

The Spartans started off finals strong. Dacheux, Sammy Greenwald (Germantown, Md,/Northwest), Stone, and Chelsea Ross (Paoli, Pa./PA Cyber) teamed up and broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The group swam a 1:41.86 to break the previous record of 1:42.50 set in 2010. Against some strong competition, the relay finished in fourth place.

Up next, Hinkle swam an extremely strong race in the 500-yard freestyle. She finished in seventh place with a time of 5:20.20. Murphy finished her consolation race with a 5:33.48, good for 14th. Tonkay completed her race in 5:37.16, good for 15th.

Buglino's strong day continued as she broke the record she set in the morning's preliminaries. She clocked a 2:15.16 in the 200 yard IM finals, earning herself a seventh place finish. In the same event, Schuster finished 12th with a time of 2:20.96

Dacheux also had a strong 50-yard freestyle race with an eighth place finish and a time of 25.67. Stone sprinted to a 25.42 finish in ninth overall, first in the consolation heat, while Romm finished in sixteenth with a 26.97.

To end the evening, the Spartans earned fourth place in the 400 medley relay. Ross, Dacheux, Stone and Kelsie Pike (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) finished the race in 4:15.13. York entered the championships with a seed time of 4:25.51.

The Green and White return to action on Saturday. Preliminaries begin at 10:00 am and finals are scheduled for 6:00 pm.
