Spartans Celebrate Triumphant Senior Day

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's swimming team completed their 2011-2012 regular season slate in winning fashion Saturday afternoon in York, defeating visiting Frostburg 142-66 in Capital Athletic Conference action. With the victory, the Spartans improve 7-8 overall on the season while the Bobcats drop to 3-9.

The Spartans kick-started the meet by sweeping the first three spots in the opening 200 medley relay. That sweep, highlighted by the first-place finish of Megan Murphy, Lindsey Buglino, Kelsie Pike, and Chelsea Ross in 2:02.26, set the stage for the York team triumph.

In the next women's event, the 1,000 freestyle, Sammy Greenwald tallied an individual victory for the Green and White with a 12:00.03 finish. Michaela Guild backed up that effort from Greenwald with a win in the 200 freestyle (2:03.94) while Ross made it 4-for-4 for the York women with a triumphant 1:04.33 in the 100 backstroke.

That streak continued through the 100 breaststroke and 200 butterfly as Pike swam to a first-place 1:17.70 and Meg Dailey touched the wall at 2:30.85, respectively.

Ross came back later in the 200 backstroke to take first for the Spartan side with a 2:18.24 while Buglino's 2:37.20 in the 200 breaststroke brought nine more points to the York ledger.

Aside from York's eight official first-place finishes, the Green and White also registered ten second-place nods. Included in that effort, Jenny Hinkle captured the runner-up spot in the 200 freestyle (2:09.07) while Kathy Murphy posted second in the 100 backstroke (1:08.17) and 200 backstroke (2:28.60). Alex Minsky took second-place in the 100 breaststroke at 1:18.34 while Anna Schuster notched the number two spot in the 200 butterfly with a 2:33.18.

Prior to today's meet, the Spartans recognized their three senior student-athletes as Kate Estes, Guild, and Kathy Murphy close out their York careers. Over the previous four seasons, the Green and White have posted a 28-27 overall record while reaching as high as fourth at the 2009-2010 CAC Championships, the squad's best finish in over a decade.

With their regular season now complete, the Green and White turn their collective attention squarely to the 2012 CAC Championships. York is set to travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland for the league championships set for February 17,18, and 19.
