ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The York College women's swimming squad finished the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Championships on quite a strong note Sunday. The Spartans put together an solid final day of competition en route to capturing fifth overall with 334 points.
Sophomore Chelsea Ross posted a fantastic performance in the 100 freestyle as she snagged a third-place medal for her efforts. Ross' third served as York's highest individual finish over the three-day meet as she clocked a season-best time of 55.84.
Michaela Guild, who had already broken the 500 freestyle record on Friday, registered two more Spartan records on Sunday. During her 1,650 freestyle swim, Guild went out strong over the first 1,000 to register a new program-best time of 11:03.78. The junior standout then dropped even more time over the final 650 of the race as she finished the 1,650 free in 18:13.31 to take fourth overall and establish a new school standard.
In the 200 backstroke, junior Kathy Murphy grabbed seventh-place points for the Spartans. Murphy, who posted a season-best time in the event, swam to a 2:18.58.
Ross had quality company in the 100 freestyle as rookie Anna Schuster collected seventh for the Green and White. Schuster's 57.16 closed out her strong individual performance for the Championships as she had set two school records over the first two days of competition.
Senior Alison Beverly completed her Spartan career in the consolation finals of the 200 butterfly. Beverly recorded a 2:30.55 to snag 12th.
The Spartans closed out the women's portion of the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Kate Estes, Schuster, Guild, and Ross combined for a 3:53.84.
With the season now concluded, the Spartans bid adieu to their three senior student-athletes. Beverly, Maureen Loughman, and Colleen Walker have been key to York's solid foundation over the past four seasons.
