YORK, Pa. – The York College women's swimming team picked up a split on Saturday afternoon during their first "Pink Day" meet in support of breast cancer awareness. The Spartans, who donned pink swimsuits and pink caps, topped visiting Goucher 150-55 but fell to Capital Athletic Conference foe Salisbury 190-96. The Spartans move to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the CAC.
Junior Michaela Guild had a stupendous performance as she backed up yesterday's quality showing with three more triumphs today. Guild's first victory of the double-dual meet came in the 1,000 freestyle where she tallied an 11:43.70 to secure the win. Impressively, the junior then immediately came back and won the 200 freestyle, the meet's very next event, with a time of 2:04.69. Guild would finish off her outstanding day by winning the 500 freestyle where she posted a 5:31.57.
Sophomore Chelsea Ross snagged York's fourth individual victory as she snagged the 100 freestyle. Ross touched the wall at 57.83 to take the win. She also took second on the day in the 50 freestyle where she registered a 26.49.
The Spartans' final victory came by way of the 400 freestyle relay. Kate Estes, Katelyn Room, Ross, and Anna Schuster teamed up to post the winning time of 3:54.87.
Schuster had a terrific outing of her own at the double dual. Aside from anchoring the 400 free relay, the talented rookie came in second in both the 100 freestyle and the 200 IM. Schuster posted a 58.94 in the 100 free, as she and Ross where the only swimmers to break 1:00.00 in the race, while she clocked in at 2:23.04 in the 200 IM.
Kathy Murphy registered a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a 1:07.00 while freshman Jenny Hinkle – another talented newcomer – came in second in the 1,000 freestyle with an 11:46.99.
This meet concludes York's schedule for the 2010 calendar year. The Spartans' return to the pool on January 15 when they host Ursinus in a 1:00 pm dual meet. Prior to that event, the Green and White will celebrate senior day as they honor their four seniors, Alison Beverly, Lisa King, Maureen Loughman, and Colleen Walker.
