YORK, Pa. – The York College women's swimming team picked up a split Saturday afternoon in the Spartans' 2010-2011 home opener. The Green and White narrowly edged Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount 62-60 while falling to a strong Washington & Jefferson squad 102-20.
On the day, the Spartans snagged a trio of second-place overall finishes. Junior Michaela Guild, who enters her third season with the Spartans looking for a tremendous campaign, took third in the 1,000 freestyle. Guild clocked in with an 11:23.66.
Anna Schuster, a promising Spartan freshman, took second for the York squad in the 100 freestyle. The rookie registered a 57.33 to capture the runner-up spot.
The Green and White's final second-place finish came in the meet's final event – the 400 freestyle relay. Jenny Hinkle, Schuster, Chelsea Ross, and Guild combined in the race to clock at 3:55.13 time.
In addition to her second-place exploits in the 100 freestyle and 400 free relay, Schuster added two individual third-place times. She came in at 26.37 in the 50 freestyle and then took third in the 100 butterfly with a 1:04.77.
Guild nabbed a third-place spot of her own in the 500 freestyle event where she posted a time of 5:31.98.
Senior Lisa King collected a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a 2:27.16 while Ross snagged third in the 200 free with a 2:08.24.
Kathy Murphy, another junior who could have a strong season, put up a 2:21.99 in the 200 backstroke to also take third.
With their first two meets of the season now in the books, the Spartans return to action on Saturday, November 13. York hosts a quad meet on that day as they welcome CAC foe St. Mary's (Md.), Dickinson, and Susquehanna to the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center for a 1:00 pm start.
