FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College women's swimming team kicked off their 2010-2011 campaign Friday evening at the University of Mary Washington. The perennially strong UMW Eagles hosted the Capital Athletic Conference tri-meet which featured the Spartans, Eagles, and Hood College Blazers.
The Spartans collected seven true second-place finishes in their first competitive action of the season, including six individual runner-up spots. (The Green and White were credited with four first-place nods, yet they were in events that Mary Washington swam as exhibitions.)
Junior Kathy Murphy started off her season in fine fashion picking up a pair of second-place finishes. She took the runner-up spot in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.53 before snagging the second-place slot in the 200 backstroke with a 2:20.88.
Spartan newcomer Jenny Hinkle made quite a splash in her collegiate debut as she also secured two second-place times. The Green and White rookie came in at 11:35.81 in the 1,000 freestyle and later took the event's second-best time with a 5:42.70 in the 500 free.
Lisa King began her senior season by capturing the second spot in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:26.72. Sophomore Chelsea Ross snagged a second-place finish of her own by touching the wall at 57.65 in the 100 freestyle.
York's seventh true second-place time came in the 200 freestyle relay – the meet's final event. The young squad of freshman Anna Schuster, sophomore Katelyn Romm, freshman Kelsie Pike, and Ross combined to record a time of 1:47.10.
Additionally, the Green and White posted three individual third-place finishes and a relay third. Senior Alison Beverly registered two of those third-place times as she tallied a 2:35.00 in the 200 fly and a 5:12.96 in the 400 IM.
Schuster recorded third in the 100 fly, notching a time of 1:05.13.
The relay third came in the season's opening event as Amanda Silcox, Pike, King, and Schuster combined in the 200 medley relay. The crew picked up a season-starting time of 2:03.04.
York must recover quickly as they return to competition on Saturday, November 6. The Spartans' home-opener, a tri-meet featuring CAC foe Marymount (Va.) and schedule-newcomer Washington & Jefferson, is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
