ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The York College women’s swimming team, officially began the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference swimming championships Friday evening at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The Spartans smashed three school records in just the first day of competition including a pair of relay events.
York’s best finish, one of their two record-breaking relays, came in the 400 intermediate medley – where an individual best was also established. The relay saw the Spartans shatter the previous 400 IM relay time with a 4:13.64 – crushing the previous time by over three full seconds – while finishing fourth overall. Heather MacLennan (Galena, Md./St. Mark’s) led off the event with a great backstroke leg, as her split time broke York’s previous best in the 100 backstroke. Freshman Alex Minsky (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) swam a quality breaststroke before Liz Grey (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) put on a strong performance in the butterfly. Chelsea Ross (Paoli, Pa./PA Cyber) anchored the relay with a quick 100 freestyle.
The Green and White began the Championships in fine fashion as the Spartans broke the school’s 200 freestyle relay record. Ashley Stanton (Columbia, Md./Hammond), Grey, Ross, and MacLennan swam through each 50-yard leg to record a time of 1:42.75, breaking the previous best by 1.07 seconds.
Molly Wasik (York, Pa./Spring Grove) turned in York’s best individual finish as she secured eighth in the 200 IM. The senior posted a 2:19.68 to nab the top-ten time.
Stanton and Grey registered two more top tens, both coming in the 50 freestyle. Stanton, a Spartan senior this year, notched a 25.81 in the sprint event as Grey finished just behind her teammate with a 26.09.
Michaela Guild (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded a 5:35.10 in the 500 freestyle to take 11th for the Green and White.
After five women’s events, the Spartans currently sit in fourth-place overall with 98 points to their credit.
The CAC Championships resume Saturday morning with the preliminaries of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke.
