Spartans Open Season with a Victory

FREDERICK, MD-The York College women’s swim team opened their 2007-08 campaign with a 124-81 Capital Athletic Conference win at Hood College on Saturday afternoon in Frederick, MD. The Spartans improve to 1-0 overall as well as 1-0 in the league. The Blazers fall to 0-1 overall and in the conference.

The Spartans picked up five individual wins and one relay victory while they also posted six individual runner up finishes and one second place relay finish.

Junior Bridget Miller (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) recorded a pair of wins to pace the green and white. Miller won the 200 free with a time of 2:10.31, finishing ahead of teammate Allison Blaszky (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) who placed second in the event with a time of 2:11.58. Miller’s other win came in the 100 free as she touched the wall in a time of 59.53. Senior Laura McCray (Laurel, Md./Laurel) posted a win in the 200 fly as she completed the race in a time of 2:26.56. McCray also placed second in the 200 IM, notching a time of 2:28.44.

Sophomore Molly Wasik (York, Pa./Spring Grove) earned her win in the 200 backstroke as she finished with a time of 2:22.58. Senior Pam Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) recorded the final individual win with a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:48.78.

Sophomore Kaitlin Crean (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) earned a pair of runner-up finishes for the Spartans. She was second in the 1000 free with a time of 11:46.72 and also in the 500 free with a time of 5:47.16. Sophomore Ashley Stanton (Columbia, Md./Hammond) was second in the 50 free, touching the wall in a time of 27.88. Freshman Anne McElwee (Wilmington, Del./Concord) notched the final individual second with a runner-up finish in the 200 fly, completing the race in a time of 2:36.34.

In the relays, the 200 free relay team of Stanton, Kristen Leonard (Herndon, Va./Herndon), Miller, and Wasik earned a win in their event with a cumulative time of 1:52.35. The 200 medley relay team of Wasik, Tobin, McCray, and McElwee finished second in the event, notching a time of 2:03.47.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, November 3 when they host Gallaudet and Marymount. The tri-meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.
