GLASSBORO, N.J. – The York College women's swimming team had an strong showing at Saturday's Rowan Cup hosted by Rowan University. The Spartans recorded seven top-five finishes, including two relays, in the non-scoring meet.
Michaela Guild put together York's best finish as the talented junior registered the victory in the 1,650 freestyle with an 18:39.58. Guild, who bested ten other swimmers in the distance event, won the race by over 15 seconds and is only five seconds off her 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Championships time where she placed fifth.
Fellow junior Kathy Murphy notched a second-place finish of her own in the 200 backstroke. Murphy registered a 2:23.31 as she continues to post quality finishes this season.
In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Chelsea Ross posted a third-place time as she recorded a 1:05.62.
A pair of newcomers added two fifth-place times in the 500 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, respectively. Freshman Jenny Hinkle touched the wall at 5:35.00 in the 500 free while Anna Schuster, another Spartan rookie, came in at 1:05.89 in the 100 butterfly.
York's 400 freestyle relay combined for a fourth-place finish. Murphy, Kelsie Pike, Schuster, and Ross totaled a time of 4:20.91.
The four also combined in the 400 medley relay as they again took fourth-place. Murphy, Pike, Schuster, and Ross combined for a time of 4:30.43.
The Green and White return to action on Friday, December 3, when they host Penn State-Altoona and former CAC foe Gallaudet. The non-conference tri-meet is slated for a 6:00 pm start from York Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
