Eleven Records Shatter as Spartans Finish Fifth
ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The York
College women’s swim team shattered four more records Sunday
in the final day of the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference
Championships. For the meet, the Spartans finished in fifth place
with 311 points.
Freshman Michaela Guild
(Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) added three more
school-bests to her impressive rookie campaign, including two
individual records. Guild kicked off the meet’s final session
by posting both individual marks in the same race. Swimming the
1,650 freestyle, Guild passed the 1,000 mark in a school record
time of 11:15.37 and was able to maintain that quick pace
throughout the remaining 650. Guild finished the race in a time of
18:34.58, another Spartan record, and took fifth in the event.
Guild backed up those record times
in the final women’s event, the 400 freestyle relay. The
Spartan group of Ashley Stanton (Columbia,
Md./Hammond), Lisa King (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton
Wright), Guild, and Liz Grey (Bensalem,
Pa./Nazareth Academy) touched the wall in a school-record
time of 3:46.90, placing them fourth.
Junior Molly Wasik (York,
Pa./Spring Grove) tacked on yet another Spartan record,
this time in the 200 backstroke. Her 2:17.05 time gave Wasik her
fourth individual record of the league championships as she
finished the event in tenth.
Grey, who posted a solid showing
all weekend, grabbed sixth in the 200 butterfly registering a time
of 2:19.79.
Overall, the Green and White
eclipsed eleven school records at the championships, including
eight individual marks.
The Spartans now bid adieu to their
three seniors Colleen Nolan (Annandale,
Va./Annandale), Bridget Miller (Wilmington,
Del./St. Mark's), and Meghan Wallace (Metuchen,
N.J./Metuchen). This trio was a major part of the
Spartans’ overall success throughout the past four years as
the program continues its ascent up the tough CAC ladder.
