ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The York
College women’s swim team began the 2009 Capital Athletic
Conference Championships on Friday at St. Mary’s College of
Maryland. The Green and White squashed a trio school records in the
meet’s first day.
Ashley Stanton (Columbia,
Md./Hammond), Michaela Guild (Laurel, Md./St.
Vincent Pallotti), Bridget Miller (Wilmington,
Del./St. Mark's), and Liz Grey (Bensalem,
Pa./Nazareth Academy) kicked off the evening’s
finals with the 200 freestyle relay. The group touched the wall in
a school record time of 1:43.82 as they finished fifth in the
race.
Two individual school records fell later in the
evening as Guild and junior Molly Wasik (York, Pa./Spring
Grove) broke the 500 freestyle and 200 IM marks,
respectively. Guild posted her second record of the championships
with a 5:25.42 in the 500 free, good for a seventh-place finish.
Wasik’s 2:18.36 in the 200 IM gave the junior a school-best
time in the event, as she finished tenth.
Oddly enough, the Spartans highest finish did
not result in a school record. The 400 medley relay squad of Wasik,
Colleen Nolan (Annandale, Va./Annandale), Grey,
and Miller turned in a fourth-place finish with a time of
4:19.58.
The CAC Championships continue tomorrow from
St. Mary’s City, Md. The morning session will include the
preliminaries for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100
breaststroke, and 100 backstroke. The evening session will hold the
finals for each of these events in addition to the 200 medley and
800 freestyle relays.
