York College Announces 2008-09 Winter Schedule
YORK, PA- The York College athletic department
has released their 2008-09 winter schedules on Wednesday. The
Spartans’ winter sports include men and women’s
basketball, wrestling, and men and women’s swimming.
A following is a look at the upcoming Spartan winter contests.
Men’s
Basketball
2007-08 Record: 18-8, 13-3 CAC

The Spartan Skinny: The Spartans will look to
defend their 2007-08 Capital Athletic Conference regular season
championship. The green and white must replace two-time
All-American Chad McGowan and All-CAC guard Levi Winters but head
coach Jeff Gamber will have a solid core of returners in addition
to a stellar recruiting class that will enable the Spartans to be
in the upper echelon of the conference. Senior Pat Kelley, juniors
Jeremy Keefer and Nick Brady will team with a quality group of
sophomores that should provide the Spartans with key leadership on
and off the floor. The Spartans host a pair of in-season
tournaments starting with the season-opening White Rose City
Classic as York welcomes Susquehanna, Misericordia and Neumann to
Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Nov. 15 and 16. York then travels to the
Widener Tournament on Nov. 21 and 22. The Spartans final in-season
tournament will be held on Jan. 3 & 4 as McDaniel, PSU-Behrend,
and Alvernia come to York to play in the Coaches vs. Cancer
Classic.

The Spartan Skinny: The Spartans look to build on
their school-record 19 wins from a year ago. Spartan head coach
Betsy Witman must replace the graduated Kristen Daly who finished
her stellar career as the school’s third-leading all-time
scorer with over 1,500 career points. Witman turns to a strong
senior class led by three-time All-CAC guard Keli Ward and fellow
starters Amanda Andrews and Chanel Perez. Witman also has a core of
returning sophomores, headlined by starter April Sparkman that
should provide York with an outstanding opportunity to build on
their record setting 2007-08 season. The Spartans have a pair of
in-season tournaments as they travel to Johns Hopkins to play in
the Blue Jays Tournament on Nov. 22 and 23. The Spartans then host
the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic with Buffalo State, Franklin &
Marshall and North Park on Jan. 3 and 4.

The Spartan Skinny: The Spartans enter the
2008-09 campaign as a talented squad with a load of returning
wrestlers from last year’s team. A pair of national
qualifiers in seniors Kyle Flickinger and John Niedrich headlines
the returners. Flickinger won the 125-pound weight class at the
Metropolitan Wrestling Conference championship for the second
straight year. Flickinger brings a three-year record of 87-29 into
the upcoming campaign. Niedrich was a wild-card selection after
finishing second at 157 pounds at the Metro Championships. The
senior has accumulated a record of 47-18 in his two years in the
green and white. Niedrich also earned national academic accolades
as he earned National Wrestling Scholar recognition in 2007-08. The
Spartans will host the 2008-09 Metro Conference Championships on
February 22. The last time York hosted the championship (2006),
they captured the team championship.

The Spartan Skinny: The Spartans return a slew of
talented swimmers as the Spartans look to continue to become one of
the strongest teams in the Capital Athletic Conference. Head coach
Gina McHenry must replace CAC Male Swimmer of the Year Steven
Fulcher but the Spartan mentor returns all of her other letter
winners as the green and white is primed for another great year.
Matt Jennings, Steve Tobin, Stephen Doemland, Garrett Higgins,
Clark Arnold and A.J. Bean headline the talented cast of returners.
The strong core of returners teamed with another outstanding
recruiting class should allow the Spartans to build on their record
of 34-5 over the last four years.

The Spartan Skinny: York enters the 2008-09
campaign looking to continue to build on the individual successes
of last season. Junior Molly Wasik will lead the Spartans after she
had a strong CAC championships. Wasik set a new school record in
the 200 IM at championships while she also finished eighth in the
100 backstroke. Junior Ashley Stanton, senior Bridget Miller,
junior Kaitlin Crean, and senior Colleen Nolan join Wasik in the
core of quality swimmers that return to the green and white this
season.

All 2008-09 winter sports schedule have been posted on the Spartan
athletic web site, www.ycpspartans.com. The 2009 spring schedules
will be released later this summer. All times for the winter are
tentative and are subject to change.
