How It Happened

• Both teams started slow offensively, combining for just two shots in the first 20 minutes. In the 26th minute, though, Georgia Gillcrist got on the end of a long ball and volleyed it out of the air. Carly Maglio was up to the task, making the save for CNU. Gillcrist's shot was the only Spartan attempt on goal for the 90 minutes.

• CNU managed six shots in the first half, but York defended well and limited the Captains' chances. To open the second half, CNU earned an opportunity that proved critical. After Jess Wieber picked up a pass from a York defender, CNU had an indirect free kick inside the box. Carson Pokorny tapped it and Riley Cook put it away to give the Captains the 1-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

• York put the No. 8 team in the nation under pressure in the waning moments, and had their best chance of the game in the 80th minute. Caitlin Rankin cut inside and lofted a ball across the field for Gillcrist. Again, much like the chance in the first half, she volleyed it out of the air, but the ball blasted into the side netting, missing the post by inches.

• Wieber made nine saves in net for the Spartans, a career-high for the freshman.
