YORK PA. - The York College women’s soccer team (11-4-2) starts its CAC tournament run this Wednesday against Mary Washington (10-9) at 2 p.m. on Graham Field.
The Spartans enter the CAC tournament behind a strong October performance where they went 6-1-1. The team scored 20 goals and only allowed three goals in the 8 games of October. The Spartans are lead by 2012 All-American goalie Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md. / Thomas Stone), and by senior captain Dale Mason (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) on defense. Glessner has been a force all season with 44 saves and a .846 save percentage. Mason has helped lead a stingy Spartan defense that has only allowed 10.2 shots per game.
Offensively the Spartans are very balanced with 10 women having at least two goals. Clare Chatam (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) helps lead the attack with her seven assists and four goals. Beth Bunn (Lothian, Md. / Calverton School), Kayla Kovalsky (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), and Jamie Sokolis (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) have combined to score 13 of the 33 goals the Spartans have scored this season.
The Spartans have faced their CAC opener opponent once this year. The Spartans faced Mary Washington on their home turf, just under a month ago, and were able to get a 3-2 overtime victory (Read the whole story here). The Spartans will be ready to take on the Eagles, and will play host to an exciting game.
