YORK Pa. – The York College women's soccer team (6-3-1) had an offensive explosion to defeat conference foe St. Mary's College (2-7-2) 4-0 on a warm October day. The Spartans improve to 2-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference while the Seahawks are now 1-1.
The game opened up with a few scares from St. Mary's, as they took two corners early against the Spartans. The Spartan defense was stifling, with Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md. / Thomas Stone) and senior Dale Mason (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) leading the charge for the Spartan women. York then collected itself and put the pressure on the Seahawks. The offense helped keep the ball on the St. Mary half for virtually the remainder of the half.
In the 17th minute, the Spartans pressured the Seahawk goalie, Sara Eaton, and a shot bounced out of her hands. Clare Chatham (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) slipped the free ball to freshman Emily Cronise (Hagerstown, Md. / Boonsboro), who fired a shot into the open goal. The Spartan attack kept pushing the Seahawk defense, and five minutes before the half York was presented another opportunity. Elexa Sherman (Collegeville, Pa. / Methacton) took the ball down and set up 27 yards out with no defenders nearby. Sherman fired a bullet into the upper corner of the goal for York to take the 2-0 lead into the half.
The second half opened up with more offensive prowess for the York Spartans. Just 1:46 off the clock in the second half, Chatham serviced a corner kick to Jenn Lindsay (North Massapequea, N.Y. / Plainedge) who took the assist and placed a beautiful ball inside the left post. Lindsay had barely enough time to celebrate her goal, when the Spartans were threatening again. Kayla Kovalsky (Merrick, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) took the ball down to the far sideline, beside the York bench, and set-up for a highlight reel goal. Kovalsky sent a shot high into the air with a perfect trajectory, and the ball fell between the Seahawk goalie and the crossbar to bounce into the goal. York took the 4-0 lead and subsided their scoring for the remaining minutes of the game. The Spartans kept the pressure on for the rest of the game and secured the shutout.
The quartet of Spartan scorers, Cronise, Sherman, Lindsay, and Kovalsky, each scored their second goal of the season. Clare Chatham added two assists to put her total at eight on the year. All three goalies on the Spartan roster saw time in the game, Glessner, Stevi Lukacz (Leesport, Pa. / Schuylkill Valley), and Kate Lutte (Catasauqua, Pa. / Catasauqua), and each goalie recorded one save during their time in goal.
York fired 19 shots, split evenly between the two periods, and finished the game with eight shots on goal. The Seahawks managed just three shots with all coming on target in the loss.
The Spartans return to action, as a part of the big Fall Fest slate, on Saturday, October 5 against Frostburg State on Graham Field at 12:30.
