YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer squad forged a scoreless draw with unbeaten Gettysburg on a brilliantly sunny Wednesday afternoon in York.
The Spartans now stand at 3-2-1 overall while the Bullets are 5-0-2 for the campaign.
The game flowed back-and-forth all day long with a great deal of the play occurring between the two boxes. The Bullets had the better of the first half statistics, holding a 7-4 margin in total shots in the opening 45 minutes of play. The Spartans best first half chance came when freshman Jordan Neiheiser (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) hit a header that Bullet goalie Eliza Gray stopped for the save.
The Bullets looked like they got on the board just 3:16 into the half as Molly Phillips slotted a shot into the back of the net but Gettysburg was whistled for an off sides infraction, negating the goal.
Gettysburg built another great chance in the 63rd minute but a hustling Spartan defense snuffed out the chance before the Bullets could fire off a shot.
York had its best scoring chance in the first overtime as freshman Kirsten Good (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) hit a bomb from 30 yards out that Gray made a fantastic punch save, pushing the ball over the crossbar and keeping the Spartans off the board.
The Bullets finished the game with a 17-8 edge in total shots and an 11-5 margin in shots on goal. Gettysburg also had a slight 6-5 margin in corner kicks.
Junior keeper Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) was stellar in the tie as she notched a season-high 11 saves in her second shutout of the year. Gray was also up to the task as she recorded five saves for the clean sheet.
Spartan head coach was pleased with the way her team performed.
"Gettysburg is a very good team and to go toe-to-toe with them for 110 minutes is a credit to our kids," said Sterner. "We played hard and really well. I thought Jordan Neiheiser and Jamie Sokolis (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) gave us a fantastic effort up top. It was our most complete effort of the year."
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to Goucher. Kick off is set for 1:00 pm in Towson, Md.
