ANNVILLE, PA – The Lebanon Valley women's soccer team finally found the back of the net in the third minute of the first overtime as they handed the York College Spartans a 1-0 loss on a very humid Saturday in Annville, PA.
The Spartans fall to 0-1 while the Flying Dutchmen improve to 1-0.
LVC got the game winner 2:30 into overtime as Sammy Bost hit a cross into the center of the box. Sarah Dowhower finished the pass into the open netting, ending the game with the golden goal.
The Spartans didn't look in synch all day long as LVC had the better of the play for the majority of the contest.
Lebanon Valley pressured the Spartan defense from the outset. The Green and White never seemed to get organized on offense while All-American goalkeeper Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) and the Spartan defense turned away the Flying Dutchmen time and time again.
York's best scoring chance came in the 28th minute of the game as Lauren Fowler (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) drove a corner kick into the box. The ball was cleared back towards Fowler and she unleashed a rifle shot that looked like it would sneak under the cross bar for the goal. However, LVC goalie Becca Sykes made a brilliant punch save that cleared the ball over the bar and kept York off the board.
The first half was very offensively challenged as LVC outshot York 4-1. The Dutchmen had a few opportunities that were dangerous but didn't result in a recorded shot due to some Spartan defensive efforts.
The second half saw the Dutchmen become more assertive offensively but again, the Spartan defense played well to keep the game scoreless. York had a five minute flurry at the end the second period but it would not result in a great chance as the two teams headed to the extra session.
LVC finished with a 14-3 bulge in total shots but just a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
Sykes earned the shut out win with two saves in her 92:30 of work. Glessner suffered the hard-luck loss as she allowed one goal in her 92:30 of action. She was credited with one save in the loss.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as the Green and White will make their home debut against Elizabethtown College. Kick off is set for 4:00 pm.
