Spartan Women's Soccer Announces 2013 Schedule

YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer team enters their upcoming 2013 campaign with high expectations after an 8-3-7 record last season.

The Spartans were one of the best defensive teams in the country last year as they posted a school-record 15 shutouts. The Green and White surrendered just six goals all last year as they won the NCAA Division III statistical championship for team save percentage at .942. The Spartans also finished second in the nation at 0.304 goals against average.

The Spartans face a very solid schedule as their 17 opponents notched a combined 58.78% winning percentage. York's 2013 opponents went a combined 168-113-32 last year.

York faces a much different Capital Athletic Conference in 2013 as Christopher Newport, Penn State Harrisburg, and Southern Virginia join the league to form a ten-team conference. The Spartans' nine CAC opponents went a combined 90-59-13 (59.6%) last year as the York's conference slate features nine straight league games to end the regular season.

Spartan head coach Vicki Sterner is excited about her 2013 slate.

"I am excited for the upcoming season and adding Christopher Newport, Southern Virginia and Penn State Harrisburg to our conference schedule," says Sterner. "We start off with Lebanon Valley then we head to The Joe Bochicchio Tournament in Scranton.  The schedule is very competitive and will have us prepared for the start of conference play."

York's opens the season on August 31 at Lebanon Valley as they face a Flying Dutchmen squad that went 12-8-1 last year. The Spartan home opener will be on Wednesday, September 4 before York heads to the Scranton Tournament on September 7 and 8.

After a trip to McDaniel on September 11, the Spartans come home to host Gettysburg in the annual contest that is one of the best non-conference games on the Spartan schedule. Last year, the Spartans upset the Bullets with a late goal in the second overtime.

York heads back to the road in two of their next three games as a home game against Catholic is sandwiched between a contest at Goucher and the conference opener at Salisbury on September 28. That game against the Sea Gulls starts a nine game stretch of conference games. All eight of York's October contests are league matches. Home games against St. Mary's on the second and Frostburg State on the fifth start the October schedule before trips to Marymount and Mary Washington on the eighth and 12th. A Tuesday clash with Wesley precedes a trip to Christopher Newport on the 19th before a contest against Southern Virginia ends the regular season home schedule with Senior Day. A trip up Route 83 to face PSU Harrisburg closes out the regular season on October 30.

The CAC Tournament starts on November 2 with the tournament's opening round. The semifinals will be held on November 5 followed by the championship game on November 9.
