Spartan Offense Erupts for 10 Goals

YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer made their 2012 home debut an impressive one as the Spartans rolled past Maritime College 10-0 in a non-conference contest. The Spartans, who entered the game having scored just one goal in their first three games, improve to 2-0-2 overall while the Privateers fall to 0-5.

The Spartan offense went on the attack from the opening whistle. The Spartans put their first shot on frame a mere 51 seconds and continued their assault on the Maritime defense. The Spartans fired off 10 shots in the first 14 minutes of the game before junior Kristi Hepner (Bowie, Md./Bowie) finally found the back of the net at the 14:13 mark. The goal was her first of the year and ended a 268:58 scoreless drought for the Spartan offense.

That opened the floodgates for the Spartan offense. Sophomore Taylor Folk (Beavertown, Pa. / Midd-West) notched her second goal of the season just 1:39 later as she scored an unassisted tally, putting York up 2-0. Freshman Jamie Sokolis (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) completed the flurry with her first collegiate goal at the 16:41 mark as the Spartan lead grew to 3-0.

The Green and White continued to put heavy pressure on Privateer goalie Meghin Paczkowski as the Spartan shots mounted. Paczkowski stood strong as she kept York off the board again until the 36:38 mark. That's when senior Tyler Frantz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) scored off a Traci Mohl (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) feed, pushing the Spartan lead to 4-0. Frantz's goal started another quick Spartan flurry of scoring. Freshman Samm Testerman (White Marsh, Md./Perry Hall) notched her first collegiate goal off another Mohl assist at the 40:32 mark. Freshman Caroll Charles (Moutville, Pa./Eastern York) then finished off the first half scoring with a goal at the 43:21 mark. Charles' goal was assisted by fellow freshman Jessica Christakis (Abginton, Md./Bel Air) as the Spartans took a 6-0 lead to the break.

The Spartans continued to play a solid possession game in the second half as Spartan head coach Vicki Sterner got quality playing time for her entire squad.

Senior Caitlin Aversa (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) opened the second half scoring after a pass from Folk just 9:23 in to the stanza.

York received three more second half goals as sophomore Kayla Kovalsky (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenburg, Memorial), freshman Emma Georgantis (York, Pa./Red Lion), and sophomore Lauren Fowler (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) each found the back of the net in the second 45.

The Spartans held a 52-1 bulge in total shots and a 31-0 margin in shots on goal. In all, ten different Spartans scored goals while five different players had assists led by Mohl's two helpers.

Sophomore Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) played the first 45 minutes and was not forced to face a shot. Sophomore Jenn Hulse (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) played the second 45 and faced one shot but it was wide of the mark.

Paczkowski finished the game with 20 saves in her 90 minutes of duty in beween the pipes.

The Spartans attempted 17 corner kicks in the contest while Maritime had two.

York heads to Dickinson on Wednesday afternoon as they face the Red Devils in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 4:30 pm in Carlisle.
