Spartans Close Out CAC Campaign with 2-0 Triumph

ARLINGTON, Va. – The York College women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Marymount (Va.) Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Va. The Spartans' final Capital Athletic Conference regular season contest brings the squad to a 6-10 overall mark including 6-2 in the CAC. The Saints fall to 4-10 on the year and 0-7 in league play.

Following a scoreless first half, senior captain Lacey Phillips gave the Spartans a 1-0 advantage in the 49th minute. Fellow senior Stephanie Rice served a ball in from the left side allowing Jordan Snook to skim it toward the back post. Near the goal line, an alert Phillips finished the opportunity with a one-time strike, which proved the eventual game-winner.

Having already notched an assist, Snook put the Green and White up by two late in the 64th minute. After a Marymount foul along the left side of the field, senior Emily Cook served in a beautiful ball on the ensuing free kick. Carrying over the Saint goalkeeper, Snook headed home the service to give York the final 2-0 result. Snook's tally is her team-leading eighth goal of the 2011 campaign.

Just over a minute before Snook's goal, Rice nearly posted a tally of her own. Striking a ball from the left side, Rice's attempt hurtled toward the Saint net. Unfortunately for the Green and White, her shot caromed off the right post as the match remained 1-0 York.

Marymount almost slashed the Spartan lead in half in the 75th minute as Danni Bankins struck a ball from the right side of the pitch. In a similar fashion to Rice's earlier attempt for York, the ball ricocheted off the far post, allowing York to maintain the shutout bid.

For the game, the Spartans recorded 21 shots, including 14 in the second half, while holding their hosts to just four attempts. York also grabbed a 6-3 lead in corners.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel records the triumph as she made one save over her 84:43 of work. Melanie Glessner relieved Spanarkel for the final 5:17 and was not forced to make a stop. Marymount's Victoria Wyand notched three saves in her 55:37 while Gaby Prellezo totaled four stops in 34:23.

With the CAC Tournament seeds now set, the Spartans snag the #4 spot and are slated to take on fifth-seeded Mary Washington or St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday, October 30. Prior to that contest, the Green and White complete their 2011 regular season schedule on Wednesday, October 26, as they travel to Moravian for a 3:30 pm non-conference tilt.
