YORK, Pa. – The York College women's soccer team fell 2-1 Wednesday as Dorie Gedridge's 88th-minute tally lifted Frostburg State to the Capital Athletic Conference victory. The loss leaves the Spartans at 5-10 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Bobcats improve to 13-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the league.
With less than three minutes remaining in regulation Frostburg's Gedridge gained possession of the ball off of a York turnover near half. Gedridge then dribbled the ball up the right side of the field and unleashed a shot into the upper left corner of the goal over York goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel. It was Gedridge's third goal of the season and proved to be the game-winner.
Despite it's late fall, York dominated the majority of play, starting the first half off with five shots on goal in the first twenty minutes. Sophomore Jordan Snook had a dangerous attempt in the third minute, which Frostburg goalkeeper Michelle Buckmaster tipped away for the save. York had another scoring opportunity in the fifth minute when senior Stephanie Rice crossed the ball from the left side of the field into the box. Rice's cross bounced off the goal post as the attack eventually went for naught. The Spartans continued to have scoring chances in the first half including shots from Snook and Clare Chatham.
Adria Graham put the Bobcats ahead in the 35th minute off of a corner kick. Abby Aposporos delivered a nicely placed ball to the top of the box and onto the feet of Liz Seligman who chipped the ball toward the goal. Graham got a foot to the ball and redirected the shot passed the York defense in to the back of the net. Graham's team-leading 13th tally of the season put her squad up 1-0.
The Green and White finally broke through in the 58th minute when Jena Arnister dished the ball off to Snook at the top of the box. Snook ripped a one-timed shot into the upper right corner of the goal for her seventh goal of the season.
Spanarkel finished her final regular season home game with four saves over her 90 minutes of work. Buckmaster ended the game with five stops.
For the match, the Spartans tallied five corners to Frostburg's three, while the two squads each recorded eight shots.
York returns to action on Saturday, October 22, for their final CAC regular season match. York is slated to visit Marymount (Va.) in a 3:30 pm match at Wakefield High School.
