Spartans Come Up Just Short As Gettysburg Notches the 1-0 Victory

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's soccer team fell to visiting Gettysburg College by a final score of 1-0 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Graham Field in York. With the defeat, the Spartans fall to 4-9 on the year while the Bullets improve to 7-5 in the 2011 campaign.

Gettysburg was able to notch the match's lone tally as junior forward Casey Attanasio found the back of the net in the 29th minute of play. After receiving a pass from sophomore forward Rachel West in the center of the field, Attanasio struck the ball from roughly 20 yards out over the outstretched-arm of Spartan goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel. Attanasio's game-winner, her fifth goal of the season, gave the Bullets the 1-0 advantage and eventual final result.

The Bullets were in control of the game for much of the first half of play as it seemed York was unable to establish a rhythm offensively, attempting just a single shot for the entire first 45 minutes. Although Gettysburg had more opportunities than the Spartans in the first stanza, the Bullets were only able to get the ball past Spanarkel just once as they took their one-goal lead into halftime.

Neither team was able to execute well in the attack in the second period, however York did look substantially better than they had during the first 45 minutes of play.

The Spartans seemed to pick up momentum throughout the second half, highlighted by a flurry of action within the final 20 minutes. One of the Green and White's most dangerous opportunities came from sophomore defender Paige Yeager when York was awarded a free kick in the 72nd minute. Yeager fired a rip toward the Gettysburg goal, a shot which required a save over the goal by Gettysburg goalkeeper Allie Rivera to preserve the lead for her team.  The ensuing corner from freshman midfielder Traci Mohl, which was followed shortly after by another from senior Lacey Phillips, proved fruitless.

As time was quickly slipped off the clock, the Spartans had three opportunities to knot the game at 1-1 within the final five minutes of the match, but each of the three attempts were futile as Gettysburg held on for the 1-0 victory.

York outshot the Bullets 6-4 in the second half, although Gettysburg held the advantage throughout the contest by an 11-7 margin. Spanarkel and the Spartan defense proved tough in the second half, as the keeper recorded three saves on the day and kept the team's hopes of a comeback alive throughout the latter 45 minutes.

The Spartans will attempt to learn from this defeat as they turn their collective attention to Saturday's Capital Athletic Conference match-up with Mary Washington. York hosts the Eagles in a 12:30 pm match at Graham Field.
