Spartans Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play
YORK, Pa. - The York College women's soccer team defeated Wesley 4-1 Saturday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference match at Graham Field in York. With the victory, the Spartans improve to 4-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Wolverines drop to 6-5 overall and suffer their second loss in conference play, now standing at 1-2.
York came out strong scoring less than six minutes into the game. Senior captain Lacey Phillips connected with Jordan Snook for the Green and White's first tally as the sophomore fired a low shot past Wesley's goalkeeper Sydney Kahan inside the right post.
The Spartans scored again in the first half with less than eight seconds left in the period. Mary Hunkeler played a nice lead pass to Dani Bock who buried the ball past an oncoming Kahan. The notch proved Bock's first goal of her college career.
The second half saw the Wolverines cut the Spartan lead in half as they scored in the 73rd -minute. On a breakaway, Stevi Carpenter launched a shot over York's goalkeeper Mel Glessner, as she rang the crossbar with the attempt. An alert Samantha Lyon followed up the shot with a header into the back of the net.
York quickly responded with a goal in the 77th-minute by Beth Bunn. Bunn carried the ball into the box, took a composed touch around an oncoming Kahan, and buried the ball into the net for her first career goal.
The Spartans' final tally came on a penalty kick in the 87th -minute. Senior Lauren Ward was tripped along the right side of the box as Dale Mason stepped to the spot and made the most of the penalty kick opportunity.
Making her first career start for York, goalkeeper Melanie Glessner put together a solid performance. In front of Glessner, York's defensive unit of Mason, Jenn Lindsay, Caitlin Aversa, and Clare Chatham an outstanding job thwarting the Wesley attack on a number of occasions and frequently clearing the ball for Glessner.
Throughout the contest York outshot Wesley 21-2, while also leading the Wolverines in corners 8-1.
The Spartans will attempt to build on this victory as they turn their attention to Sunday's matchup against Franklin & Marshall at 1:00 pm at Graham Field.
