Team Effort Leads York to 1-0 Triumph over Stevenson in CAC Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The York College women's soccer team picked up an outstanding 1-0 triumph over Stevenson Saturday evening, in each squads first Capital Athletic Conference match of the 2011 campaign. With the victory, the Spartans pick up their first win of the year and move to 1-4 and, more importantly, 1-0 in CAC action. The Mustangs fall to 3-3-1 and 0-1 in league play.

York wasted little time before putting home the game-winner early in the first half. Sophomore Dale Mason played a ball from the right side to Jordan Snook near the middle of the Mustang goal. The forward promptly hit a strike into the upper left to give the visiting Spartans a 1-0 lead just 2:47 into the contest. Snook now has a pair of tallies on the young season.

That score would hold up throughout the remainder of the 87-plus minutes of action, but not without anxious moments for both sides.

Jena Arnister nearly put the Green and White up 2-0 in the 18th minute as she hit a shot on target that Mustang goalkeeper Brittany Ross parried away. The Spartans almost finished the rebound but were unable to capitalize.

Stevenson had numerous chances of their own including several by talented forward Stephanie Eyler. One of her attempts knocked off the crossbar while two others were saved by Spartan goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel.

Highlighted by the efforts of Jenn Lindsay and Mason, the Spartan defensive unit put together a tremendous performance to pick up York's first shutout of the season. Lindsay's solid ball-winning ability from the back proved crucial to the Spartan triumph, while Mason harassed Eyler throughout the contest allowing the all-conference forward only three shots.

Spanarkel records her first clean sheet of her senior campaign as she made six saves over her 90 minutes of action. Ross made six stops of her own for the Mustangs.

For the game, Stevenson outshot York 15-11 but the Spartans held a 5-3 advantage in second-half shots and a 7-6 lead in shots on goal.

The Spartans now turn their attention to Monday, September 19, as they host nearby Elizabethtown. York welcomes the Blue Jays to Graham Field for a 4:30 pm non-conference tilt.
