Spanarkel Outstanding but Spartans Fall to Allegheny

PITTSBURGH, PA – The York College women's soccer team opened their stay at the Carnegie Mellon Radisson Invitational with a 1-0 loss to Allegheny College on a stormy night in Pittsburgh. The Spartans fall to 0-3 with the setback while the Gators improve to 3-1 overall.

The first half action was back and forth with neither team gaining any significant traction. The Gators had four shots, which were all on target while the Spartans had three shots with one being on goal.

The second half was a much different story as the Gators peppered Spartan keeper Sarah Spanarkel repeatedly in the stanza. The senior stood tall as she kept Allegheny off the board early in the frame. In the 64th minute, the Gators' Kira Kliment took a free kick from outside the right corner of the 18. Spanarkel made a dazzling play on the ball and tipped it over the cross bar, preserving the shutout.

The Gators finally beat Spanarkel in the 68th minute as Katrina Gazsi scored on a shot from the 18 to the far post. Dayna Rowe earned the assist as the goal was Gazsi's first of the year.

Spanarkel turned the Gators away in the 79th minute as Kliment took a corner and passed to Alex Gordon. Gordon fired a shot that Spanarkel tipped over the crossbar to preserve York's 1-0 deficit.

For the match, Spanarkel recorded a career-high11 saves in her 90 minutes of work. Allegheny keeper Emily Karr was forced to make just one stop in the shutout.

Allegheny finished with a 16-3 edge in total shots including a 12-1 margin in shots on goal. The Gators also held an 11-2 bulge in corner kicks.

York returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they face the host Tartans at 3:30 pm in Pittsburgh.
