Mergler, Sipes, and Wivell Named All-CAC
YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer team had three players selected to the 2010 All-Capital Athletic Conference squads as announced by the conference on Friday afternoon. Senior Stephanie Mergler, senior Ally Wivell, and sophomore Kat Sipes each earned second-team accolades. All three players served as captains to the Spartan squad this year.
Mergler, a forward, is making her third appearance on the all-league teams. She was a first team selection in 2009 and a second team pick in 2007. Mergler finished the season with a team-leading 10 points on three goals and four assists. She had one game winning goal and converted her lone penalty kick of the year. Mergler, who missed five games due to injury late in the year, finished her career with 20 goals and 23 assists for 63 points in 78 games. She tallied five game-winning goals in her Spartan career.
Sipes, a midfielder, makes her second All-CAC appearance as she was a second-team pick last year. She finished the season with eight points on four goals. Sipes started the season playing a more defensive midfield position before sliding up to center midfield position where she became more of an offensive force late in the season. Sipes had one game-winning goal for the Green and White. In her 35 career games, Sipes has 17 points on eight goals and one assist.
Wivell's appearance on the All-CAC team is the first in her stellar career. She finished her time in the Green and White as a four-year starter. Wivell, a defender, played in 80 games over her four-year Spartan career as she recorded four points on four assists for her career. Two of those four assists came during the 2010 season. She spearheaded a Spartan defense that notched four shutouts and had a 1.45 goals against average.
Sipes will be the lone returner of the three as the Green and White attempts to climb back up to the upper echelon of the CAC after finishing fourth in 2010.
