Sipes Hat Trick Powers Spartans

DOVER, DEL – York College sophomore captain Kat Sipes recorded her first career hat trick as the Spartans shutout Wesley College 3-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action from Dover, Delaware on Saturday night. The Spartans improve to 3-5-1 overall and 3-1 in the CAC while the Wolverines fall to 1-6-1 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Spartans began the game attacking the Wolverines from the start. The Green and White fired off the first 14 shots of the game as the majority of the half was spent in the Wolverines' defensive half of the field. The ninth shot from the Spartans came when senior Stephanie Mergler served a corner kick into the box. Sipes banged home the pass with a brilliant header in the 20th minute as York seized the early lead. It could have been a bigger lead for York at the half but Wesley keeper Sydney Kahan recorded five saves to keep the Spartan advantage at 1-0.

York wasted little time in extending the lead in the second half as Sipes struck again, this time it was an unassisted goal, just 2:13 into the second 45 minutes of play.

Sipes completed the hat trick just over ten minutes later as Mergler banged a shot off the post that Sipes calmly collected the loose ball and one-timed a shot past Kahan for the 3-0 Spartan lead.

The Spartans dominated the game statistically as they outshot the Wolverines 25-6 while they also held a 9-6 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Sarah Spanarkel started in goal and recorded three saves in her 70:30 of action. Sophomore Katie Meehan played the remaining 19:30 and registered one stop for York.

Kahan went the distance in goal for the Wolverines as she made 10 saves in her 90 minutes of work. She allowed all three Spartan goals in the game.

The Spartans step out of conference on Tuesday when they host top-ranked Messiah College in a 4:00 pm contest at Graham Field.
