Bad Spurt Costs Spartans in Loss at Misericordia

DALLAS, PA – The York College women's soccer team dropped their second straight to open the 2010 season as the Misericordia Cougars upended the Spartans 3-2 in a non-conference contest in Dallas, PA on Saturday. The Spartans fall to 0-2 for the campaign while the Cougars improved to 2-0.

The story of the game came within a two-minute stretch early in the second half. The Cougars owned a 1-0 lead at the break but the Spartans notched the equalizer just under six minutes into the second half. Senior Carly Bock found the back of the net on a corner kick, drawing the Spartans to even in the game's 52nd minute.

Things went south for the Spartans just over ten minutes later as the Cougars struck for a pair of goals a mere 1:37 apart, turning the tie into a two-goal margin. Kim Suchoski recorded the first goal in the 63rd minute off a pass from Alyssa Mocion. Emily Esposito tacked on the eventual game-winner as she blasted home a deflection in the 64th minute.

The Spartans tried to rally late, but the quick Misericordia spurt ended up ruining the day for the Green and White. Freshman Cassie Castle found senior Stephanie Mergler for the Spartans' second goal. Mergler's tally was her first of the season and came in the game's 81st minute. York two shots and a corner kick in the final eight minutes but could not notch the equalizer as they suffered the tough loss.

Jenn Brucker gave the Cougars the early lead as she struck for the first half's lone goal in the 37th minute. Brucker's tally was unassisted and came on a corner kick as the ball deflected off Spartan goalie Sarah Spanarkel into the back of the net.

The Spartans outshot the Cougars 15-12 while Misericordia held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.

Spanarkel suffered the loss as she allowed three goals in her 90 minutes of action. She registered seven saves as she falls to 0-2. Morgan Myers improves to 2-0 for the Cougars as she notched seven saves while she allowed the two Spartan goals in her 90 minutes of work.

The Spartans conclude their season-opening three game road swing on Wednesday, September 8 when they travel to Elizabethtown College to face the Blue Jays. Game time from Elizabethtown is set for 7:00 pm.
