YORK, PA – The York College women’s soccer team topped visiting Franklin and Marshall Tuesday evening by a 3-1 final. The Spartans (8-2-1) came out with a very strong start against the Diplomats (3-9), scoring a goal within the first two minutes of the game. Kat Sipes (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) headed the ball into the left top shelf off a corner kick from junior Carly Bock (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville).
Throughout much of the first half, the Spartans controlled play as they maintained possession and pressured the Diplomats’ defense.
Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) tried to add an insurance tally onto the Spartan scoreboard but both attempts pushed wide. Meghan Rowland (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also looked to add to the Spartan total with an attempt in the 25th minute. But as would be York’s trend in the first half, her shot flew wide of the Diplomat net.
At the end of the first half the Spartans came off the field with a total of 13 shot attempts but only one goal. As for the Diplomats they only amassed two shots as each went begging.
Three minutes into the second half the Spartans tried to come out with a bang like they did in the first half. Kat Torode (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) had a nice break away down the right side of the field before slipping a pass over to the far left post. Stephanie Rice (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) came up just short of the ball however, leaving the score at 1-0.
The Spartans continued to push the ball down the field and in an attempt for an insurance goal but kept knocking their attempts wide of the Diplomat goal.
Then in the 77th minute of the match, Torode was finally able to hit one in, thanks to a Mergler corner kick, making it her fourth goal of the season.
Minutes after the second Spartan goal, York again lined up for a corner, hoping to tack on another score. Off the corner kick, Kaitlyn Harney (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) served the ball right in front of the net as it was flicked into the back of the net as freshman Katie Meehan (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) was credited with the score; her first goal of the season. Also making it the Spartan’s third goal of the afternoon off of a corner kick.
With time running out on the clock, Franklin and Marshall pressured the Spartans in an attempt to break the clean sheet. With only 1:25 remaining in the match, the Diplomats’ Christine Madonia headed the ball into the goal off the corner by Jen Korngut to bring the final result to 3-1, with all four scores coming by way of corners.
For the game, York led in shots by a significant 23-5 margin while registering eleven corners to the Diplomats’ two.
The Spartans’ shared the goalkeeping duties as sophomore Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) played the first 45 minutes recording one save. Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) began the second stanza for the Green and White making a pair of saves to secure the victory. Katie Golding started for the visitors posting one save while she was relieved after halftime for Jessica House who made four stops.
The Spartans are set to take on Marymount University on Friday, October 9, hoping to come away from Arlington, Va. with their ninth victory of the year. Game time for the Capital Athletic Conference contest is set for 5:00 pm.
