Spartans Cruise Past Marymount on Friday
ARLINGTON, VA – The York College women’s soccer team rolled to a 5-1 Capital Athletic Conference win at Marymount University on Friday afternoon in Arlington, VA. The Spartans improve to 9-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the CAC. The Saints are still in search of their first win as they fall to 0-11 overall and 0-4 in the league.
The Spartans opened the scoring early in the contest as Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) tallied a goal off a feed from Kat Sipes (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) in the game’s eighth minute.
The Saints battled back to tie the score on a counter in the 12th minute. Stephanie Flood received a breakaway pass from Rebecca Zimmerman and tallied the goal, tying the game at one.
The Green and White bounced back, taking the play to the Saints. After the Marymount goal, the Spartans forced three corners in the next four minutes. York then squeezed off four shots over the next six minutes before finding the back of the net a second time with Mergler feeding Allie Jensen (Parville, Md./Parkville) for the goal in the 23rd minute of play.
York continued to carry play over the final 20 minutes of the half but they would be unable to dent the goal as they settled for a 2-1 halftime lead. York outshot the hosts 14-4 in the opening half while they also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
York wasted little time in increasing the lead early in the second half as senior Kat Torode (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) tallied the first of her two goals in the game. Junior Carly Bock (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) earned the assist on the goal as Torode’s tally came 7:35 into the second half.
The Spartan lead grew to 4-1 when Mergler picked up her second goal of the game in the 80th minute of play off a feed from Ilana Kline (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill). The two goals for Mergler lift her season total to five.
Torode closed out the scoring in the 81st minute as she recorded an unassisted tally for York. Torode’s two goals raise her season total to 12 as she is third on the team in total points with 12.
York finished the game holding a big 27-6 edge in shots including a 12-3 margin in shots on goal. The Spartans finished with nine corner kicks while the Saints had four.
Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) played the first 80 minutes of the game as she recorded two saves. Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) played the final 10 minutes and was not forced to make a save. Gaby Prellezo allowed three goals for Marymount in her 62 minutes of work while she made four saves. Lauren Sanders relieved her and allowed two goals in 28 minutes while she notched three stops.
