Jones' Game Winner Lifts Spartans to 1-0 Victory
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – Ali Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) provided late-game heroics Wednesday evening as the York College women’s soccer team topped host Gwynedd-Mercy 1-0 in double overtime. Jones’ tally with only 1:06 left in the game propels the Green and White to a 5-1 mark on the season while the Griffins fall to 1-5.
With the match knotted a zero and time quickly pouring off the clock, Jones hit a shot that caromed off of Griffin netminder Kristie Pollock. The ensuing melee squirted the loose ball back to Jones who buried her second attempt, notching the game winner. Three of the junior’s team-leading four goals this season have been game-deciding tallies.
The match was deadlocked throughout the 90 minutes of regulation as neither side was able to gain the upper hand. The Spartan did record a slight 13-12 lead in shots but were turned away time and again by Pollock.
The same held true during overtime as both sides registered a trio of shots over the extra frames.
York’s overtime victory marks their first extra session match of the year. Over the past three campaigns, including the 2009 season, the Spartans have recorded a 6-3-5 record in overtime games.
Spartan goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) captures the victory after making ten saves for the Spartans. York also cleared one off the line earlier in the match to preserve the clean sheet. Pollock registered 12 saves for the home squad as she played exceptionally well throughout the nearly 109 minutes of action.
The Green and White will look to continue their strong start to the year on Monday when they return home to host Alvernia. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
