#16 Spartans Dominate Crusaders but Settle for 0-0 Tie
Selinsgrove, PA - The York College women's soccer team held a 20-5 edge in total shots but the #16 Spartans would be unable to find the back of the net as they tied Susquehanna University 0-0 in the season opener for both squads.
The Spartans opened the game dominating the first 15 minutes as the Crusaders were unable to sustain any significant possession. As the match progressed in the first stanza, play evened out with both sides getting into each other’s defensive third. Neither side could manage to slot one home, however, and went into the break 0-0.
The Spartans held a 6-2 advantage in shots and took the only corner kick of the first 45 minutes.
Looking for an early score in the second frame, the Spartans came out strong and pushed the pace of the match. York took the first three shots of the half and gained a pair of corner kicks within the first 12 minutes.
York was able to sustain the pressure for the rest of the half, controlling possession for much of the frame. The Spartans consistently reached the Crusader endline, earning seven total corner kicks in the second half. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Spartans were unable to capitalize on their quality play and ended regulation 0-0.
Overtime proved to be much like the previous 90 minutes as the green and white continued to control play but could not break through for a score.
The Spartans held a huge margin in shots at 20-5 and an 11-2 bulge in corner kicks.
Senior stopper Kali MacGregor (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) played a brilliant match, consistently winning head balls and thwarting numerous Crusader attacks. Sophomore midfielder Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) was a solid presence on the left side of the midfield as she spurred several chances for the Spartan side.
York’s Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) grabbed the clean sheet in the Spartan net as she was not forced to make a save. Meredith Tompeck played an exceptional match for the Crusaders, notching a career-high 14 saves for her shutout.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow, the second day of Susquehanna’s Labor Day Tournament, in Selingsgrove, Pa. York will look for their first win of the season, as they take on Lycoming at 12:00 pm.
