YORK, PA – The York College women’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 result to visiting Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson University on Spartan Senior Day, Tuesday afternoon. The York side falls to 9-6-1 on the season, including 4-3 in league play while the Mustangs up their mark to 11-5-2 and 5-1-1 in the CAC.
With a blustery October wind whipping through the pitch, the beginning of the game saw erratic play as both sides settled into the conditions. Much of the first half was played between the 18-yard boxes as neither side was able to mount much of an attack.
The Mustangs were able to break through in the the game’s 37th minute, as freshman forward Stephanie Novy recorded what would eventually be the game-winning tally. Junior Lauren Bauer clipped in a long, direct ball along the right side of the field and into the Spartans’ penalty area. A period of confusion in the York defense allowed Novy to run onto the ball and one-touch her sixth goal of the year into the Spartan net.
Down 1-0 at the beginning of the second half, York turned up the pressure, forcing much of the play to the Mustangs defensive half. Over the 45 minute period, the Spartans would register 19 shots and seven corner kicks while the Mustangs managed only two attempts on York’s net. Despite the glaring statistics, Stevenson held on throughout the second half and secured the 1-0 victory.
In total, the Spartans held a 24-5 bulge in shots and a 10-0 advantage in corners.
Senior goalkeeper Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) takes the loss in the Spartan net as she made one save in her 90 minutes of work. Freshman Brittany Ross played a quality match for the Mustangs, notching nine stops.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, October 25, as they travel to Wesley for the green and white’s final CAC regular-season match. The conference tilt is slated for 1:00 pm.
