Five-Game Win Streak Snapped by #24 St. Mary's

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – The York College women's soccer team fell 2-0 at #24 St. Mary's (Md.) Saturday afternoon in a tough Capital Athletic Conference match. The loss snaps the Spartan's five-game win streak and drops York's record to 9-5-1 including 4-2 in the CAC, while the Seahawks improve to 8-1-3 and 5-0-1 in league play.

The Seahawks jumped on the board midway through the first half when Taylor Cervenka netted her third tally of 2008.  St. Mary’s was able to get in behind the Spartan defense courtesy of a through-ball from Bridget McGovern. Cervenka collected the pass and dribbled toward the York net before unleashing a shot that Spartan goalkeeper Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) was able to get a hand to but unable to keep out of the goal.

Neither side would break again throughout the remainder of the first stanza. The Spartans seemed to have the better of the play however, notching seven shots to St. Mary’s four to go along with two corner kicks to zero for the Seahawks.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the home squad would add an insurance goal with just over 15 minutes left in regulation. Kaitlin Boswell collected the ball 30 yards from the Spartan goal, split two defenders herself, and lifted her shot over Halaka for Boswell’s second tally of the year.

The Spartans push for scores in the waning minutes of match went begging as St. Mary’s secured the 2-0 victory.

Despite the loss, the green and white outshot their opponents 16-10, putting nine of their attempts on frame. The Spartans also held a 7-3 advantage in corners but were simply unable to capitalize.

Halaka takes the loss in net for York, as she made three saves on the afternoon. The Seahawks’ Marie Oben played well between the pipes, notching nine saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The Spartans will look to return to their winning ways on Tuesday, October 21, as they host Stevenson in a crucial CAC match. Conference action from Graham Field is slated for 4:00 pm.
